Gilberto prepares for journey to the Middle East

November 9th, 2005

Source

São Paulo – The Brazilian football team will be departing tomorrow (09) on their way to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, where they will play a friendly game against the country team on Saturday (12). The players leaving from Brazil are Cicinho, Gustavo Nery and Ricardinho, together with the technical commission.

They are going to fly to Frankfurt, in Germany. There, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), they will meet the other team members who play for European football teams: Dida, Julio Cesar, Cafu, Edmílson, Juan, Lúcio, Luisão, Roque Júnior, Roberto Carlos, Emerson, Gilberto Silva, Juninho Pernambucano, Kaká, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Zé Roberto, Robinho, Adriano and Fred.

On Sunday, the team will travel to Kuwati, where they will have another friendly game against Kuwait All Stars on November 15.

So, in summary: Gilberto will fly go Germany today (Wednesday) to meet with the Brasil Seleção. From there, he will fly to the Middle East. That is quite an exhausting trip.
He will play for Brasil on Saturday, then return to London to play for Arsenal (against Wigan) on the following Saturday.

Good luck, Berty boy. Don’t get injured.

Gilberto vs Sunderland video clip

November 6th, 2005

For those of you who think Gilberto never makes a successful pass, I have video evidence which strongly suggests otherwise.

http://www.invisiblewall.net/videos/sunderland/henry_5nov.avi – Gilberto passes the ball forward, and it results in a GOAL! The commentator also makes note of this fact.

Well, I thought it was exciting enough to brag about. So there.

A big “HA! IN YOUR FACE!” to F365 (in this article) for listing “Gilberto Silva to pass the ball forward, occasionally accurately” as one of “Fifty Things We’d Like To Happen This Season…But Won’t”.
They are only redeemed by the fact that they sell this Tshirt. Once you’ve downloaded Gilberto’s forward-pass video, you are allowed to buy that tshirt.

Also, if you’re a lover of Brazilian style flicks and skills, check out Thierry Henry’s overhead kick: http://www.invisiblewall.net/videos/sunderland/henry_overhead.avi – Henry’s bicycle kick.

Thanks to Archie for the video clips. You know who you are.

Check it, yo.

Has Van Bommel bettered Gilberto’s record?

November 3rd, 2005

Source

Last night, Van bommel scored a goal in the Champions League — FORTY SECONDS after kick off.

This only features in “Gilberto News” because it was feared by many Gilberto fans that maybe Gilberto Silva’s only record may have been broken.

I can confirm this rumour to be absolutely FALSE. Gilberto Silva is STILL the fastest scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League.

He scored 20 seconds into a game. Lovely.

Yes. It is a slow week for Gilberto news, I had to post something — anything — about Gilberto.

Gilberto’s first captain report

October 18th, 2005

Gilberto played in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Sparta Prague on Tuesday, and started the game wearing the captains armband.

As a groin-injury precaution, Arsenal captain Thierry Henry was on the bench. Vice captain Dennis Bergkamp didn’t fly to Prague because he is afraid of aeroplanes. Third in command Sol Campbell was out injured.

It left Silva with the responsibility of captain – and the chance to repay Wenger’s faith in his “leadership qualities”.

And he did. Very well. Until Henry was substituted on. After 22 minutes.

Henry scored twice – breaking Ian Wright’s Arsenal scoring record. He scored the first one, interestingly enough, without the captains arm band, but after Gilberto realised the quality of Henry’s goal, he handed over the armband to the official club captain.

Here is a photo of Henry scoring his first goal:

Here is a photo of Henry scoring his second goal: (note the armband this time)

GILBERTO TO CAPTAIN ARSENAL AGAINST PRAGUE

October 18th, 2005

Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Fredrik Ljungberg and Aleksandr Hleb all miss out through injury, while Dennis Bergkamp’s fear of flying has kept him in London. However, captain Thierry Henry has provided a timely boost by returning to the substitutes’ bench. Gilberto skippers the side.

Well done Gilberto! Looks like the Gilberto-for-Captain campaign here at invisiblewall.net paid off. Well, that or everyone else is injured. Probably a mix of the two.

Gilberto will be Arsenal’s fourth captain this season – a sign of how depleted Arsenal are at the moment.

Come back later to see pictures of Gilberto with his captain armband on! It will be a proud moment for him.

Gilberto will play in Sparta Prague

October 17th, 2005

Talking about the Sparta Prague game, Arsene Wenger said: “It’s very difficult to accept as maybe Gilberto is the only one who will come back”.

Gilberto will replace Flamini, who played in the 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

It’s good news that Gilberto got back from the Brasil Selecao without injury – though a shame he had to sit and watch Arsenal lose.

Gilberto will no doubt bring Arsenal back to their winning ways – but without Sol Campbell, Thierry Henry, Ashley Cole, Freddie Ljungberg, Robin van Persie, Alexander Hleb or Dennis Bergkamp, it will definitely be a hard task.

Wenger went on to say “Twice now after the international break we have paid a heavy price in terms of injuries”.

Thankfully, this time he wasn’t talking about Gilberto!

Gilberto update

October 14th, 2005

Today (Friday), Gilberto arrives back in England from his two international games with Brazil.

He wasn’t injured, but he still won’t play for Arsenal against West Brom on Saturday, due to jet lag.

Fabregas says a few things about Gilberto

October 12th, 2005

Source

While the departure of one World Cup-winning midfielder has had a destabilizing effect on the Gunners, there is of course another one still at the club, and Fabregas admitted that playing alongside Gilberto Silva is certainly making life in the first team a lot easier.

“Of course, it is a big challenge for young players because Patrick left and now we have to play.

“But I don’t realise Patrick has gone now, I just try to play my game and learn from the other players like Gilberto.

“He’s a very experienced player and you can see why he has won the World Cup.

“We still have lots of good players like him and need to remember that,” added Fabregas who also acknowledges that life without another leading light, Thierry Henry has not made life any easier.

Gilberto unlikely to start against Brum

September 29th, 2005

Arsene Wenger says:

“I don’t know about Gilberto yet. We will have to wait until Saturday. He is starting to run again. He has a little chance to make it but he was not out for a long time. So that is a positive. Both of them probably have a small chance. Thierry and Senderos are definitely out.”

EDIT: A small update, apparently Gilberto still has a change to play against Birmingham:

Gilberto Silva was, meanwhile, due to undergo a fitness test on his ankle injury today, with Wenger keen to add his experience to central midfield.

Good news on Gilberto’s injury!

September 28th, 2005

Wenger says:

“Gilberto’s scan came back quite positive and he has an outside chance of playing on Sunday or at least after the break. We thought at first that he would be out for four to six weeks. It is good news because you always want to field as much experience as possible.”
