Gilberto to start Ghana game

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Gilberto Silva impressed coach Parreira so much in the Japan game that he’s now going to start in the knockout game against Ghana. Skillz, yo.

Bert says, “Ghana are very, very tough opponents We have seen them play already and they are a tremendously powerful team with many different weapons and a lightning-fast attack. This will be a tough game for us.”

Parreira agrees, “They have always been skilful technically but have improved a lot because they have lost their innocence. Their football is much more professional now.”

Gilberto starts for Brazil

Gilberto plays as Brazil win 4-1

Yesterday Gilberto replaced Emerson as he started for Brazil against Japan.

Gilberto was playing more or less as a centre back, since both fullbacks and the centre half (Lucio) all went forward for most of the game. Gilberto had a great game – he intercepted a lot of Japan passes, and blocked a lot of crosses. He was often the last man back for Brazil, and he also helped in attack too. He worked very hard and is a very good boy. Well done Bert, you get an A+.

A point of note is that a player called ‘Gilberto’ scored – this isn’t Gilberto Silva, but a different Gilberto who plays at left back.

Gilberto Silva played the whole 90 minutes.

Gilberto likely to start against Japan

Gilberto to start against Japan

With Brazil already qualified, and Emerson one yellow card away from suspension, Gilberto could start in Brazil’s final group game against Japan.

Parreira said he might rest injured and yellow-carded players from the game against the three-time Asian Cup winners.

Midfielder Gilberto Silva and defender Cicinho were seen likely to make the starting line-up.

In Tuesday’s training, Gilberto Silva linked up in midfield with Kaka and Juninho with Ronaldinho. The Arsenal player could come in for either Ze Roberto or Emerson, who has a yellow card.

So there you go – Gilberto to start. He has also been telling The Sun not to worry about Brazil’s average form in the first two games.

The Sun Article:

Gilberto, 29, said: “When we win people criticise and say we do not play well.

“Yet if we play well people still expect more from us because it is Brazil.

“Everyone wants Brazil to score a lot of goals in every game. It’s not as simple as that but we’ve done well.”

Brazil picked up an unconvincing 1-0 win over Croatia in their opening game before edging past Australia on Sunday.

But Gilberto is confident they will get better as the tournament progresses.

The Arsenal midfielder added: “The game against Australia was difficult.

“We controlled it and now I think we will improve as that performance was better than our first one against Croatia.

“Brazil can never relax. There is a lot of pressure and we need to be ready.

“Everybody expects a lot of us but we are all used to it.”

Reeee-spect. Go Berty.

Gilberto subbed on in world cup!

Gilberto subbed on for Brazil

Gilberto was subbed on in the 71st minute in the Brazil vs. Australia game, which Brazil won 2-0.

Gilberto replaced Emerson and did an excellent job of sealing Brazil’s defence at 1-0 down. He virtually slotted in between Brazil’s two centre backs and he cleared about 5 aerial threats with his head. One of his dodgier moments came when he ran up the pitch and then passed the ball off the field, but he wouldn’t be Gilberto if he didn’t do that.

Go Gilberto, and well done Brazil!

Brazil bus left Gilberto behind

Brazil team leaves Berlin without Gilberto

I’ve just found out that Gilberto was left in Berlin after the Croatia match which Brazil drew 1-1:

Gilberto Silva was stranded at the stadium after the team coach left without him. The Arsenal midfield player was left searching for a lift in the suburbs of west Berlin after failing to find a taxi, capping a pretty dismal evening as he had not featured in the match.

How very, very silly of Brazil. I demand a full apology to Gilberto and all of his fans PLUS compensation to cover Gilberto’s travel expenses back to his hotel. If my demands are not met, I may cry.

Gilberto vows to help Ronaldo

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

“Ronaldo wants to show his best”
And Brazil win 1-0

From Bloomberg.com

Ronaldo has rebounded from criticism and bouts of poor form throughout his career, Brazil’s Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva said. He returned from a long-term injury to be the top- scorer at the 2002 World Cup.

“All the time it’s a big pressure on him; all the papers say it’s not his best performance and then he shows the opposite of what people think,” Gilberto said. “More than anybody else he wants to show his best. We’re going to help him.”

And from The Independant:

“Ronaldo has proved people wrong time and again and I have no doubt he will do so once more,” he said. “Don’t forget that before the last World Cup people were saying he had played his last game for Brazil – and what happened? People must realise there is so much pressure on him, so much expectation. People want to write him off again but Ronaldo wants to show the world he is still a great player who can produce his best on the biggest stage of all.”

Gilberto didn’t play in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Croatia, but he always has some positive words for the team…. nice.

The player keeping Gilberto out of the first team, Emerson, picked up a yellow card in the game, and picked up a few knocks. No sign on him missing Brazil’s next game, though.

Fifa carry out drug tests on Brazil quartet

Fifa’s anti-doping team paid an unannounced visit to the hotel being used by Brazil’s World Cup squad in Switzerland on Thursday to carry out drug tests on four players.

Fifa’s chief medical officer Jiri Dvork led the operation which took urine samples from Juninho, Gilberto Silva, Luisao and Rogerio Ceni.

The Brazil football federation were also asked to provide documentary proof of the knee injury which forced Barcelona midfielder Edmilson to pull out of the squad on Wednesday. – Sapa-AFP
