Gilberto wants to stay at Arsenal - May 08, 2008

After the story earlier this week saying that "Wenger wants to keep Gilberto", this is the perfect counter-story; "Gilberto wants to stay at Arsenal".
Here's the story from Setanta Sports:

Gilberto keen on Gunners stay[/size:bb3c151812]
Arsenal’s veteran midfielder Gilberto wants to stay with the North London club beyond the end of the current season.
The 31-year-old’s future at Emirates Stadium has been somewhat uncertain after his bit-part inclusion this campaign, but Mathieu Flamini’s imminent departure for Milan appears to have opened the door for the Brazilian.
Now the international says he would like to remain at the club after he was linked with a move away earlier in the season, but admits his long-term prospects rest in the hands of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
“I want to stay at the club,” Gilberto said in The Daily Star. “I enjoy being at Arsenal – the people, the atmosphere, the football, everything about it here.
“I don’t know if the club have received any offers and the situation could change if the club gets one.
“Then we will speak about it and sort out what is best for both of us.
“I plan to go on holiday back to Brazil to think things over and see what happens.
“But at the moment I plan to return to the club after my holiday because I do not know what the club are thinking.
“I cannot say whether I will be here or not next season.
“Managers make plans, but then things happen at the end of the season that they didn’t expect to happen.”

Gilberto wants to stay, and Wenger wants him to stay. I'd put two and two together to say that he'll be with Arsenal next season - but in football, two and two don't always make four.
We shall see.

Wenger wants Gilberto to stay - May 06, 2008

I will be up front about this and admit that this story is ripped straight from the great Arsenal-Mania.com. Here's the article J. Chong posted:

Wenger wants Gilberto to stay[/size:464eb6b640]
Manager Arsène Wenger has admitted that he would like Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva to stay on at the Emirates.
The Frenchman paid tribute to both Gilberto and Jens Lehmann, who he says are worthy winners and special players.
Wenger said: "It's not necessarily goodbye to Gilberto. I want him to stay but I have to sit down with him and see what he wants to do and go from there.
"Gilberto is like Jens Lehmann. You can rely on them, they're fantastic professionals.
"Gilberto is a really fantastic guy.
"We won trophies with Gilberto and Jens because they're special human beings. You don't win with average people."

Flamini moves to AC Milan - May 05, 2008

Flamini has left Arsenal FC. He has joined AC Milan.
While this isn't technically Gilberto-related news, it is still quite obviously news which could affect where Gilberto plays next season.
The fact that fellow midfielder, Flamini, has left Arsenal, could mean that Wenger is keener to hang on to Gilberto. But will Gilberto be keen to hang on at Arsenal? That is the key question, and it will be up to Wenger to persuade GIlberto to stay if that's what he wants.
Gilberto has many money-hungry agents sniffing around his general vicinity at the moment, and they will all try to engineer a deal which takes Gilberto away from Arsenal.
Who knows where Gilberto will play next season. Arsenal? England? Italy? I have no idea.

Daily Mail run "EXCLUSIVE" on Gilberto - April 26, 2008

The Daily Mail are usually a rubbish newspaper who make up all their stories, so it was a surprise yesterday when they posted a rubbish story that was made up.
Oh, wait. It wasn't surprising.
You can find the story here (click), but I'll just copy and paste it here to save you having to click.

Gilberto Silva has set his sights on a move to Italy's Serie A, with Roma leading the chase to sign him.
The popular Brazil midfielder has attracted widespread interest from England, Italy and Spain after deciding to bring down the curtain on a highly-successful six-year stay at Arsenal.
[b:04acd64cfb]He has confided to friends that[/b:04acd64cfb], after winning League and Cup honours in this country, he is ready for a change of scene, with Italy his preferred destination.
There is no shortage of takers, with both Milan clubs and Juventus challenging Roma for his signature.
Roma boss Luciano Spalletti appears to be in pole position, after falling just short in Serie A and the Champions' League this season and identifying the 31-year old as the ideal choice to add steel to his midfield.
Gilberto, signed from Atletico Mineiro in the summer of 2002, made over 30 appearances in each of his first two seasons at Arsenal but has found opportunities in the starting line-up increasingly hard to come by in recent months.
Even so, Arsenal fans will be sorry to see him go, following a significant contribution to their success under Arsene Wenger that has established him as one of the Barclays Premier League's most effective Brazilian imports.

This story is an embarrassment to journalists everywhere, even the bad ones. Though Gilberto may well leave Arsenal in the summer, this story exists based on the (made up) assumption that Gilberto told his friends that he would leave Arsenal, and then that Gilberto's friends told the Daily Mail that Gilberto would leave! What laughable fiction - that Gilberto would be so unprofessional in the first place, and secondly, hold tell such bad friends such unprofessional things.
The Daily Mail is a disgrace, and " JOHN EDWARDS", the journalist who wrote this story, should go for a long walk and think about what he has done. He should finish the walk by moving over the edge of a high pier, if possible.

Gilberto; staying professional - April 20, 2008

Gilberto netted his first goal of the season yesterday - albeit via a wicked deflection of Reading defender Andre Bikey.
It has not been the easiest of campaigns for the veteran Brazilian, who has had to watch most of it from the bench as Cesc Fabregas and Mathieu Flamini - currently out injured - forged a formidable partnership in the centre of midfield.
Gilberto has one more year to run on his contract and is hopeful he will be able to see that out at Emirates Stadium.
"I will sit down with the boss at the end of the season," he confirmed. "But for the next few weeks, I will keep focused on doing my job, trying to help the team as much as I can whether it is on the pitch, or in training working with the players.
"We always speak very nicely, Arsene is open and we will talk.
"I don't know whether you can get assurances, but I want to talk about my prospects and whether I have a chance to play, if the manager thinks I can be a good player for the team or not."
Gilberto added: "To be honest, I really want to stay and I've always expressed that.
"Of course I'm upset that I've not played much this season because last year I played the whole season and this year has been really frustrating.
"But you need to be professional, respect the manager's point of view and help the other players as much and to the maximum that I possibly can."
