Gilberto starts for Arsenal

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Gilberto was given a starting place in the Arsenal team yesterday. The game was only a Carling Cup match, mind, though Arsenal managed to beat Sheffield United 3-0.

Gilberto was widely expected to be given the captain’s armband in the absence of Gallas and Toure – but instead, the youth goalkeeper Fabianski was made captain. That’s very strange indeed, seeing how Gilberto was captain last season, is vice captain of the first team this season, is an accomplished international with experience coming out of his ears. Fabianski on the other hand was on his second ever Arsenal game, and is extremely young. Strange decision by Wenger there. I mean, Wenger has said in the past that defenders make better captains than midfielders – but Fabianski isn’t even a defender, he’s a goalie. Ah well. Well done to Gilberto for taking this all very professionally. It could easily be seen as a snub by Wenger, but Gilberto’s attitude is top notch as ever.

Has Bert done enough to replace Flamini in the first team? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
